The real tragedy here, like so many others that we’ve lost before her, is that it seems like this loss could have been prevented.
At least, according to Chaka Khan.
The icon, who herself is a recovering addict, spoke on Whitney Houston, and she believes the troubled singer’s death could have been prevented, if she had someone with her who could have kept her away from substance abuse.
She explains:
“I stand on, whoever flew her out to perform at that party, should have provided someone to be there. To somehow, keep the riff-raff out of the situation. To keep the dangerous people away. I think we all, as artists, because we’re highly sensitive people, and this machine around us, this so-called ‘music industry,’ is such a demonic thing. It’s sacrifices people’s lives and their essences at the drop of a dime…I had a manager once say to me, ‘ You know you’re worth more money dead than alive.’ I mean, I’ve cried for her, a lot over the years, so many times. In a way I’ve mourned her, because I felt something was gonna happen because she was so close to the wire.”
Just awful to even think about.
The poor thing.
Hopefully, if there is any silver lining in this devastating loss, it’s that this will serve as a reminder to those in the industry who are struggling with addiction – or close to those who are – that life can be lost in a split second, and that if they need help, now is the time to reach out for it.
May Whitney R.I.P.
Our thoughts continue to go out to Chaka, as well as all of Whitney’s friends, family, loved ones, and fans during this impossibly difficult time.

Whitney Houston’s body has arrived back in her native New Jersey ahead of a planned funeral at the end of the week.
/> The pop superstar was found dead in her hotel suite in Los Angeles on Saturday and her body was subsequently released back to her family after coroners ruled out foul play.
Houston’s body was flown back to her home state on Monday on a private jet owned by moviemaker Tyler Perry and late that night it arrived at an airport in Teterboro, New Jersey, where a number of fans had gathered.
It was then transported in a gold hearse to the Whigham funeral home in Newark, where Houston was born.
Houston’s family will hold a funeral service later this week and reports suggest it will take place at Newark’s Prudential Center arena on Friday.
The cause of Houston’s death is still under investigation pending the results of toxicology tests.

Angelina Jolie has been honored for raising awareness of human rights issues with her directorial debut In The Land Of Blood And Honey.
/> The actress stepped behind the camera for the harrowing movie, about a forbidden romance between a Bosnian woman and a Serbian soldier during the Bosnian War.
Jolie was the guest of honor at the Cinema For Peace Gala in Berlin, Germany on Monday and she was handed the special film accolade as partner Brad Pitt looked on.
The movie will premiere in Sarajevo, Bosnia on Tuesday, and Jolie admits she’s feeling apprehensive about the showing.
She told reporters, “I’m nervous and I’m excited. I’ll probably cry through the entire thing. I’ll be very, very moved because, of course, a lot of the people coming are the victims of war so it’s going to be heavy.”

Katy Perry reportedly changed the lyrics of the song she performed at the Grammy Awards to reflect her recent split from husband Russell Brand.
/> The singer, whose marriage to the British funnyman collapsed in December after just 14 months, took to the stage at the glitzy prizegiving on Sunday to sing her new track Part of Me.
The song was written in 2010 and a version which recently leaked online included the line “You can keep the dog/I never liked him anyway,” according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.
However, the singer reportedly changed the words for her Grammy performance in light of her divorce news, and instead sang, “You can keep the diamond ring/it don’t mean nothing anyway.”
The single was released on Monday and includes the reported lyric change.
